Ryujinx Canary vs Stable
Canary and Stable answer different needs. Pick based on how much change you want — not just the version number. Both use the same keys, firmware, and game-folder setup once installed.

Quick decision
- First install or daily play → start with Stable.
- A release note or issue mentions a fix you need → try Canary.
- Canary broke after an update → roll back to Stable or an older tag.
- Want both → install each channel in its own folder (see below).
Pick a channel
Use Canary for the newest builds
Canary updates frequently and may include the latest fixes, platform changes, or experimental work. That speed can also introduce new bugs.
Use Stable for fewer surprises
Stable updates less often and is usually easier for everyday use. New features may arrive more slowly.
Choose by user type
New to Switch emulation
Use Stable for your first install. Fewer moving parts while you learn keys, firmware, and game folders.
Chasing a specific fix or game
Check the Canary release notes or project issues. If a recent Canary build addresses your problem, download that tag — keep Stable as a fallback.
Steam Deck / handheld Linux
Either channel works with the Linux x64 build. Many Deck users prefer Canary for newer compatibility fixes; choose Stable if you want calmer updates.
Common scenarios
Use Stable if you are new
Stable is the better first install because updates arrive more slowly and are easier to reason about.
Use Canary for a newer fix
Canary is useful when release notes or issue comments point to a recent fix you specifically need.
Go back if Canary breaks
If a Canary update causes trouble, return to Stable or a previously working build from the same trusted source.
How to switch or try the other channel
- Open the Canary or Stable release list on git.ryujinx.app and pick a tag.
- Download the Asset that matches your OS and CPU (x64 vs ARM64).
- Extract to a new folder — do not overwrite a working install until you have tested the new build.
- Launch the new build. Keys and firmware in your Ryujinx user folder are usually shared unless you use portable mode.
- If the new build fails, reopen your previous folder or download an older tag from the same release list.
Running both Canary and Stable
Many users keep Stable for everyday play and Canary for testing. Install each channel in a separate directory, for example:
Canary→~/Ryujinx-Canary/Stable→~/Ryujinx-Stable/
Both builds typically read the same user data under ~/.config/Ryujinx on Linux or %AppData%/Ryujinx on Windows unless you enable portable mode in a subfolder.
When you upgrade the AppImage on Steam Deck, update any Steam or EmuDeck shortcut to point at the new file path.
Compare at a glance
| Dimension | Canary | Stable |
|---|---|---|
| Update frequency | High (per commit) | Low (roughly monthly) |
| Stability | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Testers & enthusiasts | General users |
| Risk | New bugs can appear | New features arrive slower |
| Release list | git.ryujinx.app — Canary | git.ryujinx.app — Stable |
| New-game fixes | Arrive sooner | Arrive after testing |
| When something breaks | Try older Canary tag or switch to Stable | Download previous Stable tag |
Same setup either way
Keys, firmware, and game directories work the same for both channels. Only the download tag changes.

Common questions
- Is first-time setup the same for Canary and Stable?
- Yes. prod.keys, firmware, and game folders follow the same steps. Only the binary you download differs.
- Can I install both Canary and Stable?
- Yes. Use separate folders for each build. They can share the same Ryujinx user directory unless you use portable mode.
- Do I need to update Canary every day?
- No. Update when you need a fix from release notes or when you choose to test a newer build. Stable users typically update monthly or less.
- Which channel is better for newer games?
- Canary often receives compatibility fixes sooner. If a title fails on Stable, check whether a recent Canary build addresses it — then keep Stable as backup.
- Canary or Stable on Steam Deck?
- Both work with the Linux x64 AppImage. Canary is common for compatibility updates; Stable is fine if your library already runs well. Steam Deck guide.
- How do I avoid fake Ryujinx downloads?
- Download only from git.ryujinx.app release Assets or this site’s links that point to the same files. Do not use repacked bundles from unknown uploaders.
